This immersive 3-hour workshop focuses on developing clear, compelling astrological writing. Through guided exercises, we practice translating astrological symbolism into language that resonates with people who may not speak “astrologer.” The goal is to write in a way that is precise, concise, specific — and accessible.

We’ll explore techniques for clarity and brevity while studying the craft of great writers such as E.B. White, Kurt Vonnegut, and Stephen King. We also discuss Steven Pinker’s idea of the “Curse of Knowledge” and how astrologers can avoid overwhelming clients and audiences with technical jargon.

We’ll take a look at Mercury in the natal chart and the condition of the third house to understand your natural writing style. We’ll also examine the charts of a few favorite authors (email a suggestion when you register!) as well as participants’ charts to illuminate how and why we each communicate the way we do.

This workshop is especially supportive if you’ve struggled with writer’s block, self-doubt, or the lingering voice of a teacher or critic who told you “you can’t write”. Writing in community is validating and enlivening — you discover not only skill, but confidence.

Arlan Wise, OPA certified, OPA Peer Group leader, ISAR C.A.P, has been a professional consulting astrologer since 1978. She studied with Liz Greene, Michael Lutin, Dennis Elwell, Monica Dimino, and learned from listening to her clients. Arlan was on the Board of Directors of OPA from 1994-2024, serving three terms as president. She helped create OPA’s Astrologer’s Retreats, a unique conference experience, and OPA’s Certification Process. Arlan teaches writing workshops for astrologers. She edits and reviews astrology books.
