Queering the Stars & Zodiac

The practice of assigning gender to planets and zodiac signs is so commonplace that it is rarely challenged in astrology. Queering the Stars & Zodiac will analyze long-standing beliefs, spanning many astrological disciplines, about gender and the stars. This presentation will cover not just the confines of gendered interpretations of planets, but their specific effects on queer and nonbinary clients Through tapping into queer ways of relating to planets, this talk will aim to expand listener’s understandings of gender in astrology, and of the planets themselves.

Della Kurzer-Zlotnick (They/Them) is a second-generation queer astrologer who’s had a relationship with the stars since a young age. They use astrology as a healing tool first and foremost. Della’s practice is based in queerness, disability, and anti-racism. Their purpose in this work is to facilitate healing and growth with help from the stars. Della is currently studying death charts with their mom, Moon. Outside of astrology, Della is an artist, gardener, cat parent, abolitionist, and crow enthusiast.

Gender Bending: The Power of Black Moon Lilith

Black Moon Lilith is about emancipation within patriarchal gender role expectations. Women find themselves at odds with ‘forbidden’ female facets, while men must suppress any ‘weak’ traits of their Yin side. In a gender binary, heteronormative world, kids have to decide between pink or blue, either being a princess or a superhero. Black Moon Lilith encompasses struggles with these doctrines. It can often be found in significant positions in the charts of those who push against traditional gender role stereotypes.

Martin Sebastian Moritz is based in Berlin, Germany. He has a degree in psychology and is a trained therapist and trend researcher. He has been a consulting astrologer for over 30 years, lectures online and in workshops, and writes articles for astrological journals in Germany, Switzerland, and the UK. He takes a keen interest in biography work, gender issues, history, mundane, psychological, and karmic astrology. His book, ‘Pandoras Box – The Mysterious 8th House’ was published in 2021.

The Genderbending Aliveness of Succedent and Cadent Houses

If the angular houses have the most power, holding up the foundational beams of our identity, then the succedent and cadent ones are for loosening them. Often, a gender journey involves adding or removing parts of socialized behavior or aesthetics. Likewise, succedent houses try to add or climb towards resources and cadent ones remove or fall away from what’s been normalized. Traditional astrology says planets are weaker in these less dominant houses – but for those who have transitioned or are not interested in social practices that depend on gender, it’s a relief to jump off the gridlock. Let us consider the alternative futures the doors to these houses swing open.

Blair Bogin is an artist and astrologer. Outside of teaching and formal chart readings, she experiments with astrology through comedy theater and video art. She is the Director of Planets, Planets, Planets, an alt-comedy astrology theater troupe in LA, runs astrology seminars for artists and crafts monthly moving image horoscopes. She’s been going steady with the stars for over 14 years in tandem with her work as a somatic life coach.

When Planets Shift Their Gender

It’s easy to fall into an assumption when reading William Lilly (masculine, diurnall, or feminine, nocturnal) that planets are only one gender. Yet, building on an almost throwaway line by Firmicus Maturnus, what kinds of archetype-construction becomes possible when we allow the planets’ genders and gender expressions to shift based on which quadrant, sign, and house they are in, or which planets they are aspecting? Let’s experiment with building verbal portraits of the archetypes of planets when they’re in different places in the chart — and allow ourselves the possibility of seeing beyond the binary of masculine Mars and feminine Venus.

Andrew Watt began as a professional schoolteacher and an amateur magus, studying astrology alongside other methods of divination like Geomancy and Tarot. He taught English, history, and STEM-related subjects at a middle school for twenty years, while also coaching fencing and outdoor education programs. In 2016 he left teaching to start a private consulting firm — but found that more people kept asking him to read their astrology charts than anything else. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and a cat named after an Egyptian scribe-god.
